Why it matters to align how you see yourself with how others see you

Why is it important for the image you have of yourself to be as close as possible to the one others perceive?

Apart from the small, natural gap between self-perception and reality (we never see ourselves 100% as we are, for optical, physiological and cognitive reasons…), it would be helpful for the way we perceive our image to be fairly close to the way others perceive us.

In professional life this need shows in many examples:

Our image should support our communication, and the wrong communication could have a negative effect on our relationships and on achieving our goals. For example, at work a professional image that is consistent and aligned with the role's expectations can help career progression and the building of solid working relationships. A distorted perception, on the other hand, could lead to misunderstandings or to being seen as less competent or less reliable than we really are.

Any attempt to create an enhancing and/or strategic image should have a meaning and an almost unambiguous interpretation, so as not to waste energy unnecessarily. Imagine a digital marketing professional working to improve her online image. Her content is perceived as disorganised, even though her skills are excellent. Improving her reputation, linked to the perception of her image, would let her attract the clients she wants.

Another aspect to consider is the risk of wrongly adapting your communication style to situations and people and losing effectiveness. If a leader has a distorted perception of their own image, they may adopt behaviours that don't resonate with the team, reducing their ability to inspire and motivate others.

But in personal life too, aligning the perception of your image is essential:

An accurate perception of yourself, close to that of others, can lead to more authentic and meaningful relationships. If others see us very differently from how we see ourselves, misunderstandings and conflicts can arise. On the contrary, an aligned perception can make for clearer communication and greater empathy.

Where there is a significant discrepancy between how we see ourselves and how others perceive us, self-esteem problems may arise. If we see ourselves very differently from how others see us, we can become insecure or, conversely, develop a false confidence that isn't supported by reality. This can negatively affect our behaviour and our social interactions.

Finally, authenticity plays a central role. Being perceived in a way similar to how we see ourselves can contribute to a greater sense of authenticity and personal integrity. This not only makes us more confident, but also fosters trust and respect from others. Working to align our perceived image with the one others see not only improves our communication and relationships, but also contributes to our personal well-being and professional success.

In short, working to align your self-perception with that of others is crucial to avoid wasting energy and to make your actions more effective. This idea, supported by studies and research in social psychology and communication, shows how a consistent perception can lead to greater professional success and personal well-being.
